We are definitely on to something here! After the best day ever for Jane.....For dinner we had corn on the cob, broccoli, french fries and hot dogs(I burned the chicken breasts on the grill)with mayo for dipping sauce. First time Jane had ever eaten hot dogs. OM beef franks (preservatives!!). Within minutes Jane was stimming, peeing on the floor, humming, touching everyone and out of her seat. Even my husband was amazed at the transition! I am assuming it was the preservatives in the hot dog. Haven't done ketchup for a couple of days and that seems to be helping the hyperactivity. I will wait a few days and then try hot dog one day, corn, and then mayo on the following days. I don't think it would be the corn or broccoli or ff.since she has had those before. Do you? Do I really have to test each of those? That's overwhelming. I am thinking about doing some comprehensive allergy testing. My thoughts are Great Plains??? She was pretty well over the stimming, etc.. 15-20 min. later. I am a true believer after a very short time! I am planning to write a wonderful letter to the three doctors who said ,"Jane doesn't need a gfcf diet" while they shook their heads at me and rolled their eyes. This is one of our answers, I think to getting our daughter back.

The reaction you describe sounds similiar to my son's reactions to corn and dyes/preservatives. He would go absolutely bonkers, and become destructive and out of control. We pinpointed the items through meticulous food journaling, recording every single ingredient of everything he ate/touched, etc... Don't forgot to include things like medicines, vitamins, etc... Many of those contain a variety of food products. I would go back to basics, and only allow one item that is questionable. It makes pinpointing the culprit(s) much more expedient. Good luck! On a very positive note, my son who was diagnosed with severe autism at age 2 now functions normally on all levels through strigent dietary management. Unfortunately, re-introducing the triggers would result in an immediate regression. Most doctors will not believe you, despite your observations. Don't allow this to discourage you. Our neurologist insisted on witnessing a reaction firsthand, via a 24 hour video telemetry during which we exposed Tyler to corn containing products. We did this on three seperate occasions, and now they no longer doubt our observations of any food trigger. Our pediatrican and autism specialist were much more supportive on the diet issues, though. Good luck and congrats!! Diane

Diane was lucky to find a pediatrician and autistic doc that were supportive--I hear from many parents who were discouraged by doctors and lost valuable years of intervention time. I am still hopeful that through lists like this, newsletters, conferences etc parents will not wait for a physician's approval to try this. Sometimes I feel as if we've made real inroads, but other times I'm very discouraged. I have been talking about this stuff on the Internet since about 1993 and while I no longer get hate mail about it it still upsets me how often I hear from parents who say "why didn't anyone tell me?" I know a little of what you are talking about, Lisa. I took information down to our local Infant Care and other groups that help parents of special kids. I told Evan's previous worker at Infant Care to please have new parents watch the video that I bought of one of the conferences in 1999 that tells about the different approaches that can help our kids. Karyn was one of the speakers and her speech convinced me to try the diet again. I told them that the kids needed to be started on the diet when they were in the Infant Care age and the parents needed to know about the diet. I just want to shout it from the house tops but I am afraid they might lock me up and then there would be no one to fix Evan's diet. (o: But seriously, I keep telling anyone who will listen. Evan's doctor did give us a referral to an allergist to do a blood draw on Evan for food allergies. It all came back that he had none. Within two weeks Evan had a reaction to blueberries and left his face bright red around the mouth and screaming. I guess blueberries was not on the list. --Betty
