vanilla
I have a question about vanilla. I know vanilla powder is available. But couldn't we all just make our own? Isn't vodka made of potatoes? If it is, that might make it safe to make your own vanilla. Simply put 2 or 3 vanilla beans into a quart bottle and fill with vodka. Let steep 2 weeks. Voila! Vanilla! You could also try this, if you allow your kids to have sugar: place a vanilla bean in a clean pint jar. Cover completely with granulated sugar. cover tightly. Let sit 2 weeks. You now have Vanilla flavored Sugar. I found this in a cookbook when I was checking out a recipe that called for vanilla sugar. You can get vanilla beans, if you look hard enough. Some bigger grocery stores carry them in the gormet section. Some healthfood stores carry them, or will order them. My local farmers' market has a "Spice Guy" there every few weeks, and he sells them for $2 each--best price I've seen. Good luck! colleen

Hello, The vanilla in miss roben's is really expensive. we don't have trader joes here that i have seen (michigan). does anyone know of any other gfcf corn free/alcohol free alternatives??? We miss our rice cereal in the morning with vanilla and cinammon. BTW< overseas in africa, we buy packets, with sugar and vanilla together, individual portions. Thanks, Susan T
does anyone know of Susan, you might try this website. I shop at this health food store and they have a wide variety of extracts that are water based (no alcohol) and the ones I've checked are gluten free: www.andysmarket.com . They sell "mail order" as well as to walk-in customers. :) LaDonna
thanks, but the site is under construction. There is a phone # Susan
Susan You can buy vanillan sugar in some european deli's here in Canada and I also can get it at my local asian store. Maybe you could try that. BL
Some regular grocery stores carry pure, powdered vanilla. It is very flavorful and because it is powdered, does not have the alcohol base. It works very well in baked products and in things like smoothies. Look in the spice section. :) LaDonna
You can make your own vanilla sugar very easily. Though vanilla beans are expensive, they are worth the "investment." Cut one down the middle with a very sharp knife and separate the two halves (but leave them attached...just open it up.) Bury the bean in a cannister of sugar and leave it for a week before you use the sugar. Be sure to replenish the sugar every time you use some, and mix it so that the fresh sugar is moved down. I like to keep one in my confectioner's sugar and one in granulated sugar. It removes the need for finding alcohol free vanilla.
Authentic Foods (the people who make Garfava flour) also sell powdered vanilla that works really well. I think it's about $4 for a spice-sized bottle, but it's concentrated and goes far. You can find them on the web at www.authenticfoods.com. Jane In a message dated 7/3/02 11:50:39 PM Central Daylight Time, teacups@... writes:
Is Frontier alcohol free vanilla ok for yeast free baking? It has glycerine, vanilla bean extractives, and water. Thanks!
Yes. Many people use vegetable glycerine as part of their sugar replacement on yeast free or sugar reduced diets. BL
