Thought of you all when putting out the fire

I just had to tell you... Remember the divinity I tried to make and ended up filling the burner pan with the syrupy, sugary mess? Well, tonight, I forgot about that little incident and the fact that I had not replaced the pan. I put the olive oil in the skillet and on the burner. Cranked the dial up to 10 and went about the chopping. It started to smell really bad, but I ignored it, bc that's really not too unusual in my kitchen. Then I started having trouble seeing the squash I was dicing due to the smoke in the air. I quickly turned and did a double take as I saw that the flames were up past the top of my countertop microwave- which sits beside the stove. I could have been in a Smokey the Bear commercial by the way I responded quickly and calmly. I grabbed the baking soda and dumped it on the burner. It worked and I only had two flames try to start up again. The burner pan looks like cooled volcanic lava/ash with snow on top. Thank goodness for burner covers. The kids didn't even know what happened. They did come into the kitchen and coughed and looked a bit dazed. I suppose that was from the fumes. Anyway, you were in my thoughts... Janelle
