rotation diet and supplements

We recently saw Dr. Hicks (DAN doc in Grayslake, IL) for a consult after he ran extensive tests on my son. In the allergy panel Hicks did, a number of foods showed up as problems for Danny. But we had the same allergy panel run by a different lab several months previous, and some of those same foods that showed up problematic in the second test showed up with absolutely no reaction in the first test. Dr. Hicks has suggested we put Danny on a 4-day rotation diet because of the allergy test results. I'm reluctant to do this because he's already gluten free and casein free. The little guy only eats 7-8 foods as it is. And the fact that the allergy tests totally contradict each other isn't inspiring confidence. One of the things that didn't show up with any reaction the first test was oranges, and showed up a problem on the second test. That's the only thing my son will drink. He has also suggested another additional list of supplements. He wants Danny on: Nuthera w/o A & D Coramega Enzymaid L-Glutamine Vit. C Co-Q-10 Glutathione Pro-Culture Gold and Pro-Bio Gold, alternated We already had him on digestive enzymes (Enzymaid) and Nuthera, and a priobiotic, although not Pro-Culture Gold or Pro-Bio Gold Any experience with any of the above supplements? Any words of wisdom, fellow listmates? Dr. Hicks seems very knowledgable, but I'm not sure what to do about this rotation diet. Janet in Long Grove, IL (suburb of Chicago)

Can I ask if your son suffers from eczema? It is an unfortunate thing that sometimes allergy testing can show a negative result after a positive. This is why when my son showed a negative after a couple of years, we were told not to see it as him being 'cured'. Gentle reintroduction/rotation resulted in eczema patches and tummy ache, so for his own well-being we keep him away from those products. The reason I ask about eczema, is because oranges can be the culprit. My kids love mango mixed with apple juice, have you tried that instead of oranges? Take care Lesley.

Debi~ My son has always had TERRIBLE eczema. We thought it was oranges for a while when he was very young. His DAN! dr told us that Dylan's type of eczema is an Essential Fatty Acid (EFA's) deficiency. Dylan's eczema is very dry and it's all over. It frequently looks scabby (yucky, I know) When we give him high doses of Omega 3's, it clears up considerably, and his skin looks smoother and more hydrated and supple. When I run out of the supplements, it gets worse. It would be something to try, but make sure you get clean oil (free of toxins). I rarely eat oranges, but have read some heal from eczema when staying on gfcf diet. Does this seem to be the case with you, or do you have to avoid oranges and the wide array of allergy-causing foods? Debi

Debi~ We have not tried growing our own herbs. I can't be sure our ground is clear of toxins. I feel better buying from a reputable company that tests their soil and product. It is also quite difficult to extract the beneficial oils and I am not that into it. Plus, it's almost impossible to get enough of something to be beneficial by eating it. For the EFA's to help eczema, you need Omega 3's. You can get good ones through Kirkman, or ask a Naturopathic Dr or Dan doc if they have good quality ones that are randomly tested by in an independant agency to be free of toxins. These products are much safer and are about the same price as the ones you get in the HFS which may or may not be safe. You would need to check with your dr for a safe amount for your child. I decided if those were essential fatty acids that we can't make that maybe if I alternated rubbing them into my dry, flaky, itch-to-the-bone spots then maybe it would clear it up. I will try taking it orally as well as topically.

My son had quite sore patches of eczema which disappeared when we cut right down on tomatoes, banana and oranges (1 day in 4). This was after advice from a chinese herbalist. These foods have now been fully reintroduced as an everyday part of the diet with no return of the eczema for over 1 year. However, the diet is restrictive enough without taking out things that you are unsure about. Perhaps try it for 3 weeks and see if it makes a difference. Good luck. Lesley.
