Dr Stordy lecture
Hello all, I attended a school lecture by Dr Stordy on "diet, dyslexia and other specific learning disorders". It was a real eye opener, so I thought I would share some of it with you. The States was sited as being the largest nation with these problems with an increase from 5% to 20% in just 10 years. The main reasons given were the low consumption of oily fish, increased intake of hydrogenated vegetable oils and reduced number of well nourished mothers breastfeeding or using formula milk without LCP's. The bottom line was the nerve endings in the child's brain were not forming correctly and a huge amount of research confirmed that it was doe to a lack of LCP's the essential omega3 being the most important. Trans fats block the absorption. Common features in children were: Low birth weights, male, allergies, sleep problems, mood disorders, motor co-ordination problems, behaviour problems, perceptual and cognitive abnormalities. It tends to run in families and overlaps are generally seen with ADHD, Dyspraxia, autism and aspergers syndrome. Clinical trials of Efalex supplement, which contains DHA rich fish oil, evening primrose, vitamin E and Thyme, had shown an amazing increase in the child's attention, reading for the first time and generally much more settled. I am in no way endorsing this product, but the lecture was really interesting and gave room for thought. Dr Stordy has just published a book which can be ordered the Amazon.com on the subject of nutrition. I have not read it yet, but will. I never use hydrogenated oils, and stopped along time before even having children, but Dr Stordy also recommended that you do not use sunflower oil or corn oil. The best oils to use was rapeseed, followed by vegetable oil and olive oil. It would be interesting to know if any of you already use this Efalex supplement, and what you think. Lesley.
Lesley, we don't use Efalax but we take all the components as seperate entities as well as an assortment of other supplements. The Omega 6 and 3's (which my daughter tests deficient in) have helped significantly in her language development and her ability to stay focused on task. I am a firm believer in dietary support for learning disabilities. Regards, marian
We don't eat enough oily fish. Are these the same types of fish that are plentiful in DHEA? What exactly are these fish? I went through bad post-partum depression and learned that "muscle fish"--oysters, scallops, squid, etc were the ones to eat, but that we also have bad contamination in these fish as to chemical pollution, mercury, etc. Do you have any suggestions which fish would be best without contamination? Maybe we could start an autism fish farm. Anyone want to volunteer? :-) Debi
The Eflex was very unpopular as far as my daughter was concerned. It is very fishy. She does take the Nordic natural supplements which are similar extremely well.
The fish rich in the LCP's are Mackerel, fresh Salmon, fresh tuna, Swordfish, not really shellfish, cod and haddock, but all fish is better than none at all. Eggs are also high in LCP's although my son is allergic to them. Red meat is also good. In the UK we now have our first Organic salmon farm, perhaps this is the start of things to come. Or perhaps we should all go back to the traditional eating of fish on fridays. My son loves his salmon and roast vegetable (GFCF) pasta bake with toffutti cream cheese substitute. Lesley.
That sounds delicious. Could you post the recipe? Thanks, Joanne
