WHO: GOVERNMENT REFORM COMMITTEE, DAN BURTON (R-IN) CHAIRMAN
WHAT: Full Committee Hearing: "Autism - Why the Increased Rates? A One
Year Update."
WHEN: Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. and Thursday, April 26, 2001
at 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: 2154 Rayburn House Office Building
BACKGROUND
During the 106th Congress, the Committee began investigating the
dramatic rise in autism rates. What once was considered a rare disease
affecting 1 in 10,000 children now is estimated to affect 1 in 500 children
in the United States. In some areas, the rates are dramatically higher.
The Committee will examine several issues that arose during the course of
this investigation. These issues include:
* The need to fully understand the actual incidence of autism and
autism spectrum disorders;
* The potential link between thimerosal-containing vaccines and
acquired or late-onset autism;
* Late-onset Autistic Entercolitis and its potential connection to the
Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) vaccine;
* The lack of federally-funded research regarding these issues;
* The need for more autism research that will lead to better treatment
options and cures; and
* The need for more practice-based research to evaluate current
treatment options.
